A talented son of Goem

Comment: Peter D'Costa aka Prem Kumar has delighted and entertained thousands of Goemcars over the years. His illustrious career has been marked by outstanding contributions to the Concannim stage. Pedro Costa should now revert back to his baptismal name as he is far more admired and loved by the Goemcar populace than the wider Indian audience.

PREM KUMAR SELECTED FOR DALGADO AWARD
Renowned Konkani playwright, director and actor Prem Kumar has been declared as the recipient of "Dalgado Puroskar 2007", by virtue of his rich contribution to the tiatr and Konkani language over the years. The award consists of a shawl, a memento and Rs 25,000 in cash.
Peter D'Costa, who acquired the pen-name Prem Kumar, was born in Chandor, joined the theatre in his very first teen, with. Anthony D’Sa, a celebrated character actor of yesteryears, giving him the break in his first tiatr ‘Mhojo Put.’ Pleased with Prem's excellent performance, D'Sa is learnt to have said, "This boy has the capacity to take the tiatr stage to a high standard." True enough, this theatre enthusiast gave a totally new direction to the rustic tiatr, excelled as he did in script writing, direction and acting. He went to any length to procure the right props and effect to provide a pleasing performance.
His stint in Hindi films began in Dhirubai Desai's film ‘Unchi Haveli.’ Though his film career failed to click, it gave him the insight in stagecraft and other aspects, which he readily incorporated in his Konkani dramas successfully. Fifty dramas in 55 years have been marked by box hits featuring 'Vavraddi', 'Rinn', 'Dukh', 'Kakut', 'Jivit Ek Sopon', 'Konnank Mhunnonk Maim', ]Abdul Narayan D’Souza', Ordhi Bakhri', 'Jawan’ and 'Peleache Vostuchi Axea Korum Naie'. A director par excellence, Prem eventually produced Konkani film `Boglantt’ which proved quite successful.
The Dalgado Puroskar 2007’ will be conferred on Prem Kumar at a special function organised by the Dalgado Konknni Akademi, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Mons. Dalgado, on May 8 at 5 p.m. at the Black Box, Kala Academy.
