A GOEMCAR PIONEER

Comment: It is good to know that this son of Goem is still being remembered and revered a quarter of a millennium after his passing away. A pioneer who introduced the western world to Goemcar genius, Abbe Faria progeny of the fair village of Candolim, needs to be honoured.

Well done Dom Martin and Luis Vaz!!

Time now for the Government of Goem to do something that will promote the legacy of this renowned Goemcar so that generations present and future, will know that there lived a man, whose towering intellect shone like a beacon centuries ago, alerting mankind to the genius inherent in amchem bhangarachem Goem.

Sommeil Lucide on Abbe Faria website

Coinciding with 251st birth anniversary of the Goan pioneer hypnotist Abbe Faria on May 31, 2007, Dom Martin, the talented, enthusiastic and enterprising Goan artist settled in the US, has uploaded onto his website www.abbefaria.com the original French text of De La Cause Du Sommeil Lucide, Abbe Faria's opus, with the preface and introduction by D.G. Dalgado, the Goan scientist who published Abbe Faria's work on his 150th birth anniversary in 1906, and an English summary of the work. This resource would be of use to Goans and others interested in Abbe Faria and knowing French. Dom Martins website was launched to canvas support for the cause of a postage stamp in honour of the Abbe being issued by India, Portugal and France, the three countries with which Faria was associated in his lifetime, having been born in India, lived in Portugal for a while and done his major research and died in France. The only missing documents are Faria's doctorate thesis presented at the College of Propaganda Fide and the only extant letter he wrote to Goa along with which he sent an oratory to his adoptive sister, Catarina. Anyone in possession of these two items would be doing Dom Martin and Goa a favour by forwarding them to the website. [Luis Vas ]

TSKK's Konkani Course Book

Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) is glad to inform you that the long-awaited course to teach Konknni to beginners, "Romi Lipient Konknni Kors", Konknni Course in Roman Script prepared by Fr Matthew Almeida, SJ, is ready for publication. It teaches the standard Konknni found in the recently published Konknni Bible, Povitr Pustok, and other recent church literature using the Roman alphabet to write Konknni. It uses modern linguistic principles and strategies of language learning and teaching, meeting the long-felt need of those who want to learn Konknni without having to learn a new script. The main text of the lessons is given in Roman script Konknni. The basic Konknni grammar, however, is explained in English, and it is applied through graded structures used in each lesson. The exercises provided after each lesson have instructions both in Konknni and in English. The necessary Konknni vocabulary is given in each lesson. At the beginning of the course there is a small section on proper Konknni pronunciation, and a section of 50 pages at the end gives the necessary Konknni-English and English-Konknni vocabularies. The handy sized (5.6” X 8.5”) book will have 252 pages.Unfortunately, TSKK lack funds to typeset and print the course, which comes to about Rs. 70,000, and hopes some generous well wishers come forward to help pay this last bit of expense, to produce the book in a month or two. Mestre Father Archie

Comment: A man who knew, embodied and exhibited the spirit of joie de vivre, Fr Archie was a khoro Goemcar. He loved music and was proud that his race was so musically inclined. He gave a fillip to music and musicians where ever he went.
He now serenades the saints. Bessau poddonv re Father Archie-cher.
Despite being a Goemcar to his very core, it feels strange to call this man of GOD Padrtiu Archie. To his thousands of fans and admirers he will always be Father Archie.

A renowned music maker and mestre par excellence.

Fr Archie loved and preached music. Tanga-born Fr Archibald Fernandes hailed from a very rare breed of Catholic priests given to preaching music. “Goa certainly needs revival of music schools of yesteryears in our churches, since we have quite a few priests ingrained in music,” he told us way back in 2004. Fr Archie spent “enjoyable times playing with the talented boys” with who he strung together big-time bands – Green Sleeves (1973 to 1979) and Cascades – unbeatable at their superb performing style. The Fransalian priest mixed music and education admirably. As an educationist, he served as a principal of various schools – SFX High School in Siolim, St Thomas High School in Aldona and St Francis de Sales High school, which he had founded in Pune. He was also the principal of St Francis de Assisi High School at Shivaji Nagar in the same city.He played the saxophone famously. Being a music teacher, the group could not hope for a better guide and mentor than Fr Archie. He bemoaned the fact that there were “extraordinarily talented musicians among the priests”, who did not venture out to play”. Fr Archie preferred to be unusual. He even played for the Grease for two years while in Muscat. The revered bandleader’s father – Manuel Fernandes – played the flute and his mother – Petronila (Nelly) – excelled at the keyboards as does his sister Sheila. Archie and his brothers (Eddie and Ronnie) plumped for the haunting harmony of the saxophone. The eminent tunesmith regaled music aficionados throughout his priesthood. Even when he was being ordained priest 1965, he was in the thick of music. The ever jovial Fr Archie, suffered sickness stoically for quite some time, and eventually signed off from planet Earth, for greener pastures up in heaven on May 13. Fr Archie’s mortal remains will be laid to rest on May 15 in Pune.

A talented son of Goem

Comment: Peter D'Costa aka Prem Kumar has delighted and entertained thousands of Goemcars over the years. His illustrious career has been marked by outstanding contributions to the Concannim stage. Pedro Costa should now revert back to his baptismal name as he is far more admired and loved by the Goemcar populace than the wider Indian audience.
Bessau poddovn re Bab Pedro-cher. Viva!!

PREM KUMAR SELECTED FOR DALGADO AWARD
Renowned Konkani playwright, director and actor Prem Kumar has been declared as the recipient of "Dalgado Puroskar 2007", by virtue of his rich contribution to the tiatr and Konkani language over the years. The award consists of a shawl, a memento and Rs 25,000 in cash.
Peter D'Costa, who acquired the pen-name Prem Kumar, was born in Chandor, joined the theatre in his very first teen, with. Anthony D’Sa, a celebrated character actor of yesteryears, giving him the break in his first tiatr ‘Mhojo Put.’ Pleased with Prem's excellent performance, D'Sa is learnt to have said, "This boy has the capacity to take the tiatr stage to a high standard." True enough, this theatre enthusiast gave a totally new direction to the rustic tiatr, excelled as he did in script writing, direction and acting. He went to any length to procure the right props and effect to provide a pleasing performance.
His stint in Hindi films began in Dhirubai Desai's film ‘Unchi Haveli.’ Though his film career failed to click, it gave him the insight in stagecraft and other aspects, which he readily incorporated in his Konkani dramas successfully. Fifty dramas in 55 years have been marked by box hits featuring 'Vavraddi', 'Rinn', 'Dukh', 'Kakut', 'Jivit Ek Sopon', 'Konnank Mhunnonk Maim', ]Abdul Narayan D’Souza', Ordhi Bakhri', 'Jawan’ and 'Peleache Vostuchi Axea Korum Naie'. A director par excellence, Prem eventually produced Konkani film `Boglantt’ which proved quite successful.
The Dalgado Puroskar 2007’ will be conferred on Prem Kumar at a special function organised by the Dalgado Konknni Akademi, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Mons. Dalgado, on May 8 at 5 p.m. at the Black Box, Kala Academy.
